ICE DAMMING
Ice dams are the large masses of ice that collect and hang over the
lower portion of the roof. Ice damming will only occur when there
is significant
depth of snow on the roof and attic temperatures are above freezing – chiefly
due to uncontrolled and excessive heat loss and air leakage. The conditions
causing ice dams could be present for years before you actually see ice
dams. The conditions have to be right and the winter of 2003-04 had some
of these conditions.
The good news? The situations causing ice damming can be fixed and as
well as extending the life of your roof you’ll save energy too!
